>> Ojén is a picturesque white village located in the mountains just 15 minutes from Marbella.
Ojén is located 10 kilometers northeast of Marbella, on the inland road that connects with Málaga. Located next to the Almadán Stream, in a very peaceful and water-rich area, lies this village of white houses surrounded by the Blanca and Alpujata mountains.
Legend has it that only Pedro Morales knew the exact formula for Ojén brandy, which was found in the aromatic herbs he added to the liqueur. During this stage of the production process, he would order the distillery workers to leave, and when the process was complete, he would simply add his secrets. Pedro Morales died and left the recipe to his son. He, in turn, died in an accident, being the sole custodian of the secret of Ojén anise, thus losing its production to history. In the early 1970s, Juan Espada Fernández tried unsuccessfully to return this famous spirit to the town by opening a factory. The fame of Ojén spirit remains in memory and in literary and artistic references: Camilo José Cela mentions it several times in La Colmena: "He smokes 90-proof tobacco when he’s alone, and drinks ojén, good glasses of ojén, from the moment he wakes up until he goes to bed." Anita Delgado, a contemporary artist from Málaga who was married to the Maharaja of Kapurtala, used to order a small glass of ojén in Paris. During his Cubist period, Picasso immortalized the bottle of aguardiente with the legend of Ojén in his 1912 painting "Bodegón español" (Spanish Still Life).
Today, the tradition of the famous aguardiente is reflected in the delicious "raisins in aguardiente," a culinary treasure from the town of Ojén, typical of the winter season. They can be tasted and purchased at the Mill Museum in Ojén, and can also be enjoyed during the Popular Tostón Festival. One of the rooms of the Mill Museum houses the Aguardiente Museum, with a series of information panels detailing the history of this famous liqueur and its legend, along with photographs of labels from all over the world, posters, awards, old containers, and one of the few bottles that still contain Ojén aguardiente.
